Museum Escape (A Night at the Museum, RMO)

Leiden 1 room

About this venue

A Night at the Museum is not a classic escape room but a museum-wide evening experience at the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden: after closing time, up to 250 participants in teams of 2-6 wander through the empty museum for about two and a half hours. The story revolves around the fictional company TimeLabs presenting a time machine, after which historical figures—played by actors—roam the museum and need your help; over 150 puzzles and challenges are scattered among the genuine collection. There is no winning or losing: the creators ask 'Will you have the best story to tell afterward?'. Following critical trials in 2024, the 2025 edition was rewritten and better received, though opinions remain divided: the nighttime access to the museum is found magical by nearly everyone, but some visitors found the actors insufficiently interactive and the puzzles disconnected from the story. The 2026 edition is now on sale.

What visitors say

  • Unique after-hours access to the nighttime Rijksmuseum van Oudheden—the location alone is worth it
  • Ambitious scale: actors, game guides and 150+ puzzles throughout the entire museum
  • The 2025 edition is noticeably better organized than the 2024 trials
  • Actors mostly walked around as background figures—too little genuine interaction
  • Many puzzles feel like loose activities that don't carry the story; busy with multiple groups at once
