About this venue
Prison Escape Utrecht is not a classic escape room but a three-hour interactive prison experience in the real, decommissioned Pieter Baan Centrum. Up to around 125 players are simultaneously 'booked in' as detainees and must escape via social cunning: bribe guards, join factions, trade contraband and follow or devise escape plans — driven by around 25 professional actors, without complex puzzles. Visitors are mostly enthusiastic ('great actors, a gripping story') and Room Escape Artist called the revised 2025/26 version a huge improvement, with much player agency. The setup begins weeks in advance with official-looking correspondence, which ramps up the suspense considerably. There is criticism too: those who wait to be told what to do can find the experience chaotic and directionless, and the prison sometimes feels crowded due to the scale.
