About this venue
Prison Escape Utrecht is not a classic escape room but a three-hour interactive prison experience in the real, decommissioned Pieter Baan Center. Up to around 125 players are 'booked in' as inmates and must escape through cunning and social intelligence: bribing guards, joining factions, trading contraband and following or devising escape plans — brought to life by around 25 professional actors, without complex puzzles. Visitors are largely enthusiastic ('outstanding actors, a gripping story') and Room Escape Artist called the revised 2025/26 version a huge improvement, with plenty of player agency. Build-up begins weeks ahead with official-looking correspondence, which really ramps up the tension. There is also criticism: those who wait to be told what to do may find the experience chaotic and directionless, and with the scale involved, the prison sometimes feels crowded.
