Escape Bunker Valkenswaard was a now-closed escape room housed in an actual WWII bunker (with 3-meter-thick concrete walls) on Nieuwe Waalreseweg. The location itself was the theme: three rooms played out in wartime, including 'Het Achterhuis', where you had to remain hidden as someone in hiding from the German occupiers. Visitors praised the bunker's authentic atmosphere ('you feel transported back to the war'), but found the puzzles often standard Gen-1 work with many distractions and visible construction seams. The room gained national attention due to controversy around the Anne Frank theme: the Anne Frank Stichting called it offensive and the municipality investigated whether the room was even permitted. This shadow hung over the business; reviews dried up around 2019 and the location is registered as permanently closed.
