WijnEscape opened in January 2020 in wine bar Evviva in the centre of Apeldoorn and presented itself as the Netherlands' first wine-tasting escape room. The concept: a safe contains one exclusive bottle of wine, and your team cracks the code by solving puzzles whose answers are the wines themselves, tasted from a cellar of 75 different wines. More than a story, it was a framed tasting experience, hosted within the working wine bar and bookable for groups of up to six people. Lifestyle press (LINDA., FavorFlav, Donnelli) was enthusiastic about the idea ('you really don't want to escape from this wine-escape room'), but the few player reviews were more critical: very small space, disappointing wine quality, and puzzles that were barely solvable without real wine knowledge. The Apeldoorn location has closed (probably due to COVID shutdowns shortly after opening); the brand later moved to Voorthuizen.
