Universiteit in Verzet was an educational escape room by Radboud University, opened in 2018 at Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen. The story is true: in April 1943, rector Hermesdorf was the only Dutch rector to refuse to have his students sign a loyalty declaration and closed the university. In a lifelike student house from 1943, you play friends of Jozef van Hövell van Wezeveld and Westerflier, praeses of the banned student society Carolus Magnus, and face the same real choice the students faced: report for the Arbeitseinsatz or go into hiding. The room was built with historians and Jozef's own family; hints came through in an innovative, in-theme way, and the GM debrief about what actually happened is the emotional climax. Visitors praise the atmosphere, authenticity, and original puzzles (almost no locks); criticism mainly concerns inconsistent service. The original location closed around the coronavirus period (2020); the concept was given new life in December 2022 by Mark Smolenaars at ROXescape as 'De Bezetting.
