Prison Escape Doetinchem was a 3-hour 'Real Life Game' for up to 130 players at De Kruisberg, an actual prison that was in use until 2014. In the story, the prison seems normal, but detainees go missing, the authorities are losing control, and dark rumours circulate about the director. Players are transported by actual prison bus from a cafรฉ gathering point, registered as new detainees โ hand over everything, prison clothes, assigned a cell โ and must escape using purely social means. There is no game master and no puzzles or combination locks: 25 professional actors with secrets, weaknesses, and interpersonal relationships are the game, and you earn your escape through observation, roleplay, alliances, and nerve. With an escapetalk score of 8.9 (atmosphere 9.2, service 9.2, 22 reviews), visitors praise the acting quality, the authenticity of the location, and that everyone plays a different game and compares stories afterwards. Criticism: with 130 players, story threads get lost (20 people per 1 actor) and escaping sometimes feels unearned. The experience closed in 2024 when the Kruisberg location went out of use.
