About this venue
VRLoods in Surhuisterveen has been mainly a VR and gaming center since 2017 (400 m² with e-sports arena), but also built one physical escape room: GoldEscape. The story weaves fictional local history through the real village — a gold mine 'from 1866' beneath Surhuisterveen that would explain the village's prosperity, plus the legend of Johannes Goudsblom who mysteriously grew rich during the First World War. Reviewers praised the staging with an 'Efteling feel' ('you really feel like you're in a mine'), the well-thought-out puzzles and a gamemaster who intervenes at exactly the right moment; on escaperoomsnederland it scores 8.8 from 21 reviews. Caveats: many cipher and cryptography puzzles of the same type and sometimes overly loud music. Note: when VRLoods moved around 2023, the escape room was supposed to disappear — the VR center continues operating, but don't count on GoldEscape still being bookable.
